Thong [countable]
1 a long thin piece of leather used to fasten something or as part of a whip

"Thong" est en effet (normalement) "string"...
thong also used to mean flip-flop, until the "other" thong became popular about 20 years ago... Now you will always assume un string if you hear thong in AE. Except for your grandmother, who still walks on the beach with her thongs on her feet!
